If you’ve ever looked for aftermarket parts for your Mustang, you’ve probably heard of Haney Motorsport. The Texas-based vendor has been selling go-fast parts for the Mustang since 1997, and has established itself as one of the most trusted and successful retailers in the country. While HMS sells a wide variety of parts from several different manufacturers, its specialty is Saleen. Haney Motorsport has been an official retailer since 1998, and current owner Casey Schwebel has been a Saleen fanatic and owner for the better part of twenty years. Even the idea of selling Mustang parts was started after company founder Pat Haney fitted a Saleen body kit on his 1996 GT Convertible.
Ten years after the company was founded, Haney Motorsport is now the top Saleen retailer in the country, and that same ’96 convertible is still in Casey’s garage. With the launch of the latest Mustang in 2005, he figured it was time to purchase a new Mustang that could be the image vehicle for Haney Motorsport. “The S197 Mustang is the hottest Mustang in the aftermarket performance and styling market. Our new Mustang is perfect to help promote Haney Motorsport and market the products that we carry,” said Casey. Just a few days after taking delivery of a Performance White 2007 Mustang GT, the car was sent to Saleen to be fitted with the full range of Saleen performance and styling parts.
Working closely with Carlos Duran, Saleen’s sales manager, Casey fitted his Mustang with just about every part available, and even some that weren’t. A Saleen Body Kit including front fascia and grille, side skirts, rear fascia, and rear window trim gives the Mustang the signature Saleen look. Casey also opted for the optional lightweight aluminum hood as well as the spoiler-delete option for a cleaner appearance. Straying from the standard S281, Saleen fitted the lighter 20-inch 5-spoke Extreme wheels on all four corners wrapped with Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires. Also from the Extreme parts bin are the carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser that give the car a particularly aggressive look. Rounding off the exterior modifications are a set of Saleen HID Headlights.
The interior of the car was relatively left alone. Saleen leather sport seats and a Saleen centercap on the steering wheel are the only modifications, leaving the rest of the interior stock.
With the visual goodies taken care of, the focus was turned to the performance aspects of the car. The Saleen Series VI Supercharger was a must, and the Saleen Supercharger Upgrade Kit with upgraded air box, 98mm MAF sensor, 39lb fuel injectors, 3.87-inch pulley, and modified Saleen Powerflash puts the car at 475 horsepower. A Saleen Suspension System was installed including fully tuned struts, shocks, springs and rear sway bar. Casey used his influence to have Saleen also install the watt’s-link setup that was designed for the limited edition Parnelli Jones Mustang. As far as we know, this is the first and only non-PJ Saleen Mustang to get the watt’s link so far, although the setup will soon be available from Saleen as an option on the S281 or as a separate item for purchase. Additional items include the 4.10:1 Maxgrip differential from the S281 Extreme as well as a front Saleen 14-Inch Brake System and the Saleen Center Exhaust system.
While there are even more Saleen parts that could have been fitted to the car, Casey decided to stop at this point. The main reason is that he wanted to create a base Mustang will help launch Haney Motorsport into a whole new level of involvement with the Mustang aftermarket community. “We are planning on expanding our business into the tuning aspect. This car will be a great test bed for that, especially with the Saleen supercharger,” Casey said. He also plans to use the car to develop and showcase many of the other products that HMS sells. “We have many different mods that we are planning for the future. We will be dropping in one of our custom forged engines, cranking up the boost, and testing different components like exhaust and intakes. I also have some things I would like to investigate that I have not seen anyone else do. It will definitely be an R&D car for us.”
With the car’s completion at Saleen, it will be interesting to see where Casey takes the car from here. To see the car’s progress, or to view the products that Haney
Motorsport sells, you can visit www.HaneyMotorsport.com.
