Testing the Whipple 3.4 Supercharger on the Shelby GT500
Posted 2.18.2008 in Tech
Shelby GT500 owners wanting to make big power need to consider a supercharger swap. The stock Eaton blower works fine, but is somewhat limited in how much power it can
produce. Whipple Superchargers is offering a solution in the form of its W210HPR twin-screw supercharger. It displaces an incredible 3.4L compared to the stock 2.1L
stock unit! There's only a handful of these available right now, one of which was obtained by Adam Montague over at ST Motorsports. Modern Mustang Muscle stopped by
his shop last week to check out the system and to see how much power the supercharger could produce.
A few dyno runs later and Adam had the car pushing nearly 700 rwhp on 17 pounds of boost. The best part? The car was running on 91 octane. You can see the dyno
sheet below showing 698.6 rwhp and 635.53 rwtq.
Hoping to make a few extra horsepower, a lighter one-piece driveshaft was fitted, but the results were disappointing. The car actually lost power - 679.44 rwhp and
635.32 rwtq. Adam was hoping to crack the 700 mark with a few runs on 103 octane race fuel, but unfortunately didn't have any available at the time. We will hopefully
make another trip back to the shop to see just how much boost the Whipple can handle. Until then, check out the photo gallery of the
polished Whipple beauty.
